Situated just southeast of the Gulch and northeast of Edgehill and Melrose, the community is largely commercial and attracts visitors from all over the city each day with its abundant shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. One thing is certain when it comes to 8th Avenue South: There is always something to do. Over the years, the antique shops and malls lining the streets, like Cane-Ery Antique Mall, A la Maison, and Fine Offerings Antiques, have become a popular shopping destination for Middle Tennessee residents. As a matter of fact, the area is known around the Metro Nashville area as one of the top antique districts in the state. Another popular hotspot is Zanies Comedy Night Club which has hosted the likes of Jay Leno, Jeff Foxworthy, and Jerry Seinfeld over the years.
Of course, with it being Nashville, there are several places in the area to hear live music. The Basement, which sits beneath a place called Grimey’s, always has someone playing, ranging from blues to rock. Also, be sure to check out Grimey’s TOO, which is just up the street, to shop for books, records, CDs, and DVDs. Douglas Corner Café is another great place to hear live music. There are also several great restaurants in the neighborhood. Grab a coffee at Eighth & Roast, chicken at Smokin Thighs, Vietnamese food at Love Peace & Pho, or what has been voted the best Thai food in Nashville at The Smiling Elephant.
Of course, Downtown Nashville is just minutes away, and you can always catch a Titans game at Nissan Stadium, a concert at Bridgestone Arena or the Ryman Auditorium, or catch up on your music history at the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Parks and Recreation
There are several large and small Nashville parks in and around 8th Avenue South that offer plenty of amenities, greenspace, and fun things to do for residents. Rose Park which sits just west of the neighborhood is 24 acres of athletic fields and a walking track. Reservoir Park which sits in the heart of the neighborhood has basketball and tennis courts, a playground, picnic areas, walking trails, and a small reservoir. It is also within walking distance of several notable businesses. To the east of 8th Avenue South, you will find Fort Negley Park and Visitor Center, which features exhibits and videos about the history of Nashville and its role in the Civil War. Park visitors can walk the grounds, give themselves a self-guided tour, and even bring dogs on a leash. The Adventure Science Center sits next to Fort Negley Park.
